Howard Stern’s deal to join "America’s Got Talent"
as a judge is sure to boost the ratings of the show, but apparently
some parents groups are up in arms about the move. Stern took the
opportunity during an interview with CNN’s Piers Morgan to explain that
the groups have it all wrong, noting that the groups are overreacting
and they think "I’m some sort of weird pervert who’s going to convert
America into some kind of zombie sex fiends." The announcement from
Stern about joining the show came last Thursday, and since then various
groups have had a lot to say about it.
Stern will be replacing Morgan on the next season of the show, and
almost as soon as the announcement was made, the Parents Television
Council noted that NBC was making the move out of "desperation and
having lost its way." Stern insists, however, that he’s taking his new
job seriously and that he doesn’t intend to cross the lines that he so
often does with his radio show.
He noted, "But I can assure you and the rest of America what I'm looking
at here is to be a very good judge. To sit there, I take it seriously,
you know I watched the show." Stern also had a message for those who had
their children go on the show, noting, "If you're going to put your
children on television to be judged, which by the way, I don't know that
I would ever do that with my children. I raised three daughters and I
don't think that would be appropriate. But there are parents out there
who think it's a good idea. And you got to be damn sure that this is a
wise decision before you do it, because not only are you putting a kid
out there, to be judged, but, you know, if a kid really does have
talent, you do need time to nurture that talent, develop that talent."
